A Heartbreaking Transformation a Single Year Has Made in America

In late October 2024, the situation was utterly separate. Prior to the American presidential vote, reflective residents could acknowledge the nation's deep flaws – its unfairness and disparity – yet they still could perceive it as the US. A free society. A place where constitutional order held significance. A country headed by a dignified and decent official, even with his older age and increasing frailty.

These days, this autumn, many of us scarcely know the land we inhabit. People suspected of being unauthorized foreigners are collected and shoved into vans, occasionally refused legal rights. The left side of the “people’s house” – is being torn down for a grotesque dance hall. Donald Trump is harassing his adversaries or supposed enemies and demanding federal prosecutors transfer a huge total of taxpayer money. Armed military personnel are deployed across metropolitan centers on false pretexts. The military command, relabeled the War Department, has practically freed itself of routine media oversight during its expenditure of what could amount to nearly $1tn from citizen taxes. Universities, attorney offices, media outlets are yielding from leader's menaces, and rich magnates are regarded as nobility.

“America, only a few months ahead of its quarter-millennium anniversary as the world’s leading democracy, has fallen over the edge toward dictatorship and fascism,” a noted author, stated in August. “Finally, swifter than I believed likely, it did happen in America.”

Every morning starts to new horrors. It is hard to comprehend – and distressing to accept – how severely declined we are, and how quickly it occurred.

Nevertheless, we understand that the leader was legitimately chosen. Even after his deeply disturbing initial presidency and following the cautions that came with the understanding of the conservative plan – following the leader directly declared plainly he intended to act as an autocrat solely at the start – sufficient voters elected him rather than Kamala Harris.

Frightening as the present situation are, it's more frightening to recognize that we have only been nine months under this leadership. Where will three more years of this deterioration find us? And if that period becomes something even longer, because there is nobody to limit this leader from opting that additional tenure is required, possibly for national security reasons?

Certainly, not everything is hopeless. There are congressional elections in 2026 that could create a new governmental control, in case Democrats regain either chamber of Congress. There are elected officials who are striving to impose some accountability, such as representatives who are initiating an inquiry into the attempted fund seizure from legal authorities.

And a national vote three years from now could start our journey to healing exactly as last year’s election set us on this disappointing trajectory.

There are numerous residents marching in urban areas throughout communities, similar to recent last weekend during anti-authority protests.

A former official, wrote recently that “the dormant powerhouse of the US is stirring”, exactly as before post-McCarthyism in that decade or throughout the Vietnam war protests or during the Watergate scandal.

During those times, the unstable nation finally returned to balance.

He claims he knows the signals of that resurgence and observes it occurring at present. For proof, he references the widespread marches, the broad, cross-party resistance to a personality's dismissal and the largely united defiance by media to accept government requirements they solely cover approved content.

“The sleeping giant always remains asleep before specific greed turns extremely harmful, some action so disrespectful of societal benefit, specific cruelty so disruptive, that he has no choice other than to stir.”

It's a hopeful perspective, and I respect his knowledgeable stance. Perhaps he will turn out correct.

At the same time, the crucial issues endure: is the US able to ever recover? Can it reclaim its status in the world and its adherence to constitutional order?

Or must we acknowledge that the national endeavor functioned for a period, and then – suddenly, utterly – failed?

My pessimistic brain indicates that the latter is correct; that everything might be finished. My optimistic spirit, however, tells me that we need to strive, in whatever ways we can.

For me, as an observer of the press, that involves pushing media professionals to adhere, more thoroughly, to their duty of overseeing leadership. For some people, it may be engaging with political races, or coordinating protests, or discovering methods to defend voting rights.

Under twelve months back, we were in a separate situation. A year from now? Or in several years? The reality is, we cannot predict. All we can do is try to continue fighting.
