Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Secures a Significant Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the channel launched a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, evoking a cartoon version of a serene talk show. During a period often defined by cynicism, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and supported its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about observing this charming family navigate their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to help comedy break out of its current layer of irony. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well help usher in that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to experience the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
