Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board

Board Resignation
Summers stated he would retreat from public roles after legislative body disclosed his regular communications with Epstein

Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is exiting the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a series of electronic messages between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.

Summers commented in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the chance to have served, optimistic about the prospects of the organization, and anticipate following their development".

The former Harvard president, who once led the prestigious university, announced on Monday that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

Digital Correspondence

The recently released messages showed that the economist corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 detention for accused human trafficking of underage individuals.

In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company stated it accepted his choice to depart.

"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the perspective he offered to the governing body," the company commented.

Political Context

This news arrives after the two houses of the legislative branch decided on Tuesday to endorse a bill that would require the Department of Justice to disclose its records on the case.

The legislation will subsequently head to the office of the White House for signature. Trump has indicated he plans to sign the bill, after changing his view on the subject following pushback from his followers.

Correspondence Findings

A group of Epstein-related messages disclosed by the legislative panel recently included numerous prominent individuals in the Epstein's previous network, without indicating any illegal behavior by those people.

The emails indicated that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with the billionaire often seeking to link the academic to prominent world leaders.

Personal Response

After the emails were shared with the general audience, the former official said he accepted "total ownership for my ill-advised judgment to maintain interacting with Mr Epstein".

He continued that he desired "to restore faith and repair relationships with the persons closest to me".

Professional History

Summers occupied leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; functioning as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as director of the National Economic Council under the former leader.

He presided over Harvard from the early 2000s and is still a professor there. When declaring his departure from public duties previously on this week, he indicated he would maintain his educational duties.

Further Repercussions

Following his statement on Monday, the policy organization, a left-leaning research organization in DC where Summers was a senior fellow, announced that he was not affiliated with the organization.

Summers entered the directorate of the AI company, which makes the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its chief executive OpenAI's head.
