Information Available Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 lives perished and over 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have called a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have stated the death toll is 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were taken to hospital.

Those who died have not yet been formally identified, but police believe their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the individuals who have been identified at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments before the attack, stating they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with five in a critical state. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
