People have assembled across the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated offensive on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations continued in the neighboring country over a resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The attack resulted in over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.

Israel answered by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"The violent adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the prime minister stated on that day.

He also pledged to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will never again create a risk to Israel".

Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel

The Israeli government rescheduled official remembrance events until 16 October - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still took place across the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the families of people who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the families themselves, it was televised throughout Israeli broadcast stations.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was respected across the country.

Peace Talks in Egypt

At the same time, both sides' negotiating teams met in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of indirect talks to discuss the conditions of the plan.

A high-ranking representative knowledgeable about the talks revealed that an night meeting of mediated discussions began at 7 PM local time.

The official stated the morning session concluded without significant progress, amid conflicting views over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not recommence combat after the first phase of the deal.

He commented that the negotiations are "tough and have still not deliver any significant progress," but pointed out that facilitators are making efforts to reduce the disparities between the conflicting groups.

Key Matters in Talks

  • A lasting truce
  • The exchange of the hostages still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Arrangements for relief supplies distribution
  • Post-war management of the region

Civilian Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's public square earlier, young Hagar - whose brother lived through the attack on the outdoor event, where many attendees were murdered and many more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No place seems like home anymore and until every captive are released none of us will be secure."

"After we see everyone home returned, we can relax anew. Then we can begin to rebuild," she concluded.

Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their support for the loved ones of the hostages. Israel reports forty-eight remain in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be living.

Demonstrator Atalia Regev explained: "We must do whatever arrangement required for the hostages to return. But we really want guarantees that we will be secure."

Surveys now consistently show that around seventy percent of Israelis prefer the hostilities to end in exchange for the release of the captives.

Gaza Situation

At the area of the music event, grieving people assembled to honor the dead.

From the site, the boom of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the heavy Israeli bombardment persisted.

In the main city, bombardments were documented in the morning of Tuesday in the west side district, sector and Nasr areas and in the eastern neighbourhood of that sector, as well the settlement to the north-west.

"Once the night comes, the anxiety appears with it," relocated urban resident a mother, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli air strike previously, explained.

"Me and my three children are afraid of the air strikes. All the night we are lying together, clinging, notably my little child who rests his face on me the entire evening."

"Constantly we check the reports to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the fighting will resume to us."

Medical Crisis

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City announced it had accepted the corpses of six people by the afternoon, including a trio who died in an Israeli attack in the south part area.

A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of Khan Younis indicated additional victims had been transported. An individual was lost his life by Israeli troops while looking for help to the south region, medical staff said.
