Nicolas Sarkozy to Pen Prison Memoir Chronicling Three Weeks Behind Bars

The ex-president of France is preparing a personal account in the coming weeks titled Diary of a Prisoner, detailing his experience spent behind bars.

The revelation was made less than two weeks after the ex-leader gained freedom while he appeals the guilty verdict for criminal conspiracy in a case to secure election campaign funds linked to the leadership of former Libyan leader.

Prison Experience: Solitary Musings

“Inside jail there is nothing to see, and activities are scarce,” he reflects in one passage, implying the account is more about his thoughts while in seclusion instead of wider commentary on the overcrowded and troubled French prison system.

“Silence escapes me, not present in that facility, where there is endless commotion,” he states. “The noise unfortunately never stops. Yet, similar to barren lands, personal reflection grows stronger in prison.”

Freedom Plea: Recounting the Hardship

During his plea for freedom, the former leader had appeared via screen from a room in prison, depicting prison life as gruelling. He stated to the judge: “I wish to commend to all the prison staff, displaying remarkable compassion, easing this nightmare manageable – because it is a nightmare.”

“I never imagined at this stage of life, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s a hardship I must endure. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, it’s very hard. It has an impact all who experience it due to its intensity.”

Historical Context

He, the ex-head of state for a five-year term, was the first ex-leader from the EU and the first postwar leader from France to be incarcerated.

Before entering jail he mentioned he would use his time to compose an account.

Cell Library

It is not certain whether he had time to read and critique the volumes he brought with him: a life story of Jesus spanning two books and Alexandre Dumas’s novel the classic tale, a plot where a wrongfully accused individual is sentenced to jail later flees to seek vengeance.

Daily Reality

He was held in isolation to protect him in a room of about nine sq metres featuring a personal bathroom at the correctional facility in the city. Security personnel occupied a neighbouring cell.

Reports indicated his diet consisted just yogurt during his stay worried that meals provided could have been tampered with. He had facilities to cook for himself but refused this, according to reports. It is uncertain whether Sarkozy will write about meals during incarceration.

Lawyer’s Statements

Sarkozy’s lawyer, Christophe Ingrain every day throughout the jail term, stated during proceedings he would be safer outside jail compared to inside. “He received death threats, listened to yells after dark plus rapid actions in a neighbouring cell when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Case Background

His incarceration began last month when a French court imposed a half-decade term for illegal collaboration in connection with efforts to secure election financing for his presidential bid.

He denies wrongdoing and has appealed against the verdict, and a fresh trial is scheduled for the coming spring.
