Russian Drones and Rockets Target Western Ukrainian City of Lviv in Sustained Assault

Early on Sunday, the city of Lviv in western Ukraine, usually seen as one of the safest urban centers in the country, experienced among its most sustained attacks following the outset of Russia's comprehensive military campaign.

For five hours, Moscow's Iranian-designed drones and rockets struck the urban area, situated about 70km from the Polish border. Large explosions could be heard from the city center, a Unesco world heritage site.

Casualties and Damage Throughout the Country

Across the country, no fewer than five people were killed – four individuals in the Lviv region and one in the city of Zaporizhzhia. Additionally, 14 individuals were injured. Among the casualties was a 15-year-old girl, who perished along with three relatives when their home was struck.

Part of Lviv was left without electricity, according to the city leader. Large blazes broke out in multiple areas, such as a civilian industrial park in the south of the city.

As the pungent smell of smoke and fumes permeated the city, the regional governor advised residents to close their windows and refrain from venturing outdoors or to use gas masks or breathing apparatus.

Regional Reactions and Security Measures

Poland's air force stated it deployed fighter aircraft and implemented defensive measures to secure its airspace after a previous incursion by deceptive unmanned vehicles. There were also multiple unmanned aircraft observations in recent days in EU countries such as Germany and Denmark.

  • More than 50 missiles and approximately 500 attack drones were involved in the attack.
  • Weaponry comprised cruise missiles, Shahed-type drones and high-speed ballistic rockets.
  • Multiple regions were affected, including Ivano-Frankivsk, Zaporizhzhia oblast, Odesa, Kherson area, Sumy, Kharkiv and Chernihiv territory.

Appeal for International Assistance

Ukrainian leadership urged allies to strengthen air defense systems and to establish a restricted airspace – a measure that to date been met with reluctance.

"An independent cessation of hostilities in the air is possible – and it is exactly this which could pave the path to genuine negotiations. The United States and European nations must take action to make Russian leadership cease," the message emphasized.

In recent days, Russia has focused on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, causing power blackouts in multiple areas, a tactic repeated in the lead-up to winter for the previous three winters. At the same time, Ukrainian forces has been target fuel infrastructure deep inside Russian territory with its own long-range drones.

Community Impact

The city was in the midst of the yearly Lviv literary festival, with authors and audiences gathered in the urban center for one of the largest book festivals in eastern Europe.

In addition to Ukrainian writers, including poets Artur Dron and Julia Musakovska, there were international speakers including UK-based award-winning poet Fiona Benson, and, participating by video link, the Booker prize-winner Bernardine Evaristo, and the Nobel laureate Olga Tokarczuk.

On Sunday morning, debris was continuing to descend on the roads of the city, as fatigued locals ventured out and attended church services. The twisted metal remains of a unmanned aircraft rested on a pavement outside a block of flats, marked off with red tape.
