Slot Asserts He Feels Safe and Retains Liverpool's Backing After PSV Eindhoven Humiliation
The Liverpool head coach admitted that it's expected for concerns to be asked about his future after a further heavy defeat against PSV Eindhoven.
The Reds suffered their ninth loss in 12 matches, representing the club's poorest run after being demoted in the 1953-54 season.
They were dominated by the Dutch league champions on a punishing night at their home ground.
“I'm confident, things are alright, I have got plenty of backing from above,” Slot stated.
“It would be great to change things and earn three points obviously but if you are working as a coach and underperforming then it's typical that people question you.”
He added, “I am OK with my role. It is not the first time I've found myself in a challenging situation but it's necessary that we changed our fortunes.”
Talks with Club Management
When asked to elaborate on his dialogues with the team officials, Slot explained:
“We communicate frequently. They are supportive for the squad and for me and we have those conversations but they don’t call me constantly each day to say they trust me.”
He further stated, “In the normal conversations we have I perceive the trust. However I haven’t spoken to them after this game so far so we'll see.”
Familiar Issues and Player Response
The manager lamented known failings from his squad in their Champions League loss, specifically missed opportunities and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, player Jones was more forthright in his assessment of the club’s predicament.
“I haven't got the answers. Truthfully, I don’t. I'm telling that to everybody,” the midfielder stated.
“It is unacceptable. I don’t even have to wait to reflect. I'm beyond being angry internally. I’m at the point currently where I just don’t have the words.”
He went on, “It's difficult because I’m playing for the side I follow. I'm a supporter, and I’ve seen this club all my life.”
“For many years, I've not seen a Reds side experiencing a period like this with results so bad.”
He finished, “But we still have the emblem on our chest. And until that badge is taken away, we will always fight.”
“Our aim is to get this team return to where it needs to be, show everyone again the values of this club and why people call it the best team in the planet.”
“But right now, things are bad and it must improve.”
