Tuchel Seeks Bellingham's Fire Provided England's Star Sets Aside Egotism Outside.

A single omission proved sufficient. A second one and it would have started to look spiteful from the England manager, who is far too wily not to realize that winning the World Cup demands help from Jude Bellingham, although it is equally up to the player to adapt to the strategic frameworks and player rankings essential with England now that he is back in Tuchel's warm embrace.

The manager desires his aggressive mentality, his passion, but it is a matter of channeling it appropriately. Individual quality counts but England know from bitter experience that there is consequences when celebrity prevails. Still, a point has been made.

Bellingham had plenty to reflect on after being left out of last month’s squad. He watched England secure their spot at next summer’s World Cup in his absence. He saw Morgan Rogers shine as a counterpressing No 10. He heard the coach mention appreciating the group’s energy and principles. Naturally, he has responded in winning fashion, netting important strikes for Real Madrid versus their rivals and Juventus. His selection was inevitable; a second snub would have made his squad place precarious.

The expectation is that Tuchel will have a Bellingham focused on frightening rivals instead of teammates. Ultimately, on a pure footballing level, there is little benefit to picking a fight with a top talent in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period not playing has shown him that an international career is a precious, uncertain thing. The coach, for his part, can now throw a protective shield for the 22-year-old after proving that he is not afraid to take tough decisions.

“No issue exists regarding him, there is no problem with the character,” Tuchel stated. “Bellingham displays the edge. You need a certain edge to achieve greatness that he has. Everyone must help him and build an environment which he can [have] his drive in matches and for the objectives we are building as a team.”

The star dominated much of the focus at Tuchel’s squad announcement for this month’s final group games against Serbia and Albania. Who else? Well, how about Phil Foden? This is another prodigious No 10 requiring love and guidance. Foden has not played for England since March and has struggled to hit the heights recently but the boss had to consider the 25-year-old after how he played in Manchester City’s win against Borussia Dortmund recently.

The question, however, is how to use the attacking talents at England’s disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eze merit inclusion and there will be compelling reasons to select Cole Palmer once he recovers from a fitness issue. Would taking five No 10s to the tournament be excessive? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the optimal mix at the European Championship. He made concessions by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the same XI, cramping Harry Kane’s style as a result.

It seems unlikely Tuchel doing similar if it hurts the offensive structure. Space exists for one No 10, with fast wide players on the wings. Clarity is beneficial. He is in as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first time, is a No 8 and the returning Adam Wharton will compete with Elliot Anderson as a No 6. There will also be no position on the wing for Foden, who must play through the middle. The coach prefers him close to the striker. “It is illogical to ask Foden: ‘We want you on the pitch but there’s no space on your best position, could you fill in at the left side? Or the right wing?” he said. “He will play in the advanced midfield role, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this fantasy regarding him for years. I think it suits him best.”

He agreed there are occasions when Foden has not looked himself in an national jersey. “One senses almost like, ‘Does he like it?’ And a player like him who has such natural delight to play football, then obviously an issue exists, be it the position, the environment, I don’t know.

“In my opinion he is also so used to playing for his club in a particular setup, with a defined role. I think he profits a lot from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? In which positions should I turn? When should I to accelerate the match? What are my to defend?

Tuchel talked about Bellingham bursting through for tap-ins and Foden scoring strikes from outside the box. He said he has a longlist of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have dropped out. A new face is recognized for his excellent performances for City at left-back. Intrigue is high.

The omission of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in the selection. Interestingly, Tuchel hinted at deploying the playmaker as a deep-lying striker versus one opponent or Albania. Other options, Marcus Rashford, the midfielder and Jarrod Bowen are alternatives should he be unavailable. With qualification secured, this is a moment for testing tactics.

Meanwhile, it is additionally a chance to get Kane’s relationship with Bellingham going. It is remarkable that you have to go back to Bellingham assisting the captain to net in a friendly win versus the Scots in September 2023 to find the sole instance in 35 games for England when the duo combined for a score. Tuchel will be aware that Kane and Bellingham only passed to each other a single time during England’s draws with Denmark and Slovenia at the European Championship. The connection is lacking.

“This is where at some point it falls to the responsibility of the individuals,” he said. He is not afraid to speak frankly. Remains a sense of the player under scrutiny. He may not be assured to start against the upcoming opponents. The manager wants Bellingham committed but he will be monitoring him carefully. Leave self-importance at the door. Doing so could turn a very strong squad into an more effective one.
